Nobody Likes Me, Everybody Hates Me, Guess I'll Go Eat Worms

I was going to write a post today about the push-pull of motherhood and work and staying at home with children and the external intrusions that try to define women. Instead, here's what I'm writing:

So, I'm watching "The Real Housewives of New York" and here's another person who is going on and on about a career that is fabulous and enriching (both for soul and for purse) for which she was not particularly trained that was a hobby and just blossomed like a big ol' freaking flower and now has her all on TV with a book and I'm sitting here with squat.

Where's my stuff? Man, I suck.

*P.S. And here's what else I'm wondering: If you could (or had to) enter a totally different field, what would it be?

I was just thinking yesterday about how when I graduated from high school, I had plans to be a scriptwriter. Of course, I was going to the absolute wrong school for that (a small college in a southern city), but that was certainly the goal. Somehow, along the way I got sidetracked and studied to be a high school teacher, a journalist, and ultimately, a professor.
Now, however, I don't think I want to be a scriptwriter. Sure, it would be great to see my work on the small screen, but that's no longer what I want to do. I am doing what I want to do. If I had to do something else, I think I would be a journalist.
When I was in school, I gave up on the idea of journalism for various reasons--one being that I am not aggressive enough to track down the story no matter what. I didn't realize, then, however, that I didn't have to be the one to get the breaking news; there are other types of stories that I could write for venues other than a newspaper.
During an internship in college, I learned that I liked the flexibility of the journalist's schedule (I could be out of the office all day working on a story), I liked meeting and talking with different people from various walks of life, and I LOVED the immediacy of seeing my writing in print every week. It was a nice gig. And it allowed me to still read and write.
So, that's what I'd do. If I had to.
Or, I would write the great American novel.

Ooh, I am gritting my teeth in solidarity...that bugged me from TRHONY too. Frankly, the one that makes me the most frustrated is how The Countess is drinking champagne at Gotham publishing offices and toasting her book when (or did I dream this?) someone else is writing the book for her.

And you do NOT suck.

If I could change careers, I would be a graphic designer, an interior decorator, or a fashion designer. Something creative, with color.

Clearly, this post was a not-so-veiled cry for validation . . . . Thanks for the response and for the solidarity! I needed that!

Oh! And, yes, I think that the Countess did have someone else there writing the book. What in the world?! (She could at least have hired me. Just saying.)

Can we say, "Stephanie Meyer"? Oops, I accidentally wrote a best-selling novel and then wrote three more and now I'm rich and famous. Oops!
